A fresh look {Headshots} Ferry Building

It can be difficult to have a total stranger take your pictures for headshots. It's unsettling, you aren't sure what your "look" is, and you have to stare at a giant camera staring you back and hope for results that bring out the real you. Steven rocked his headshots and trusted me to capture him just as he is...professional, trustworthy and kind. Here are some of my favorites from our Headshot session at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Where to take your family photos in San Francisco? | San Francisco Family Photographer

Let me start by saying that I love when my clients let me give suggestions on where to take photos. I love being able to incorporate somewhere that is special to them that also showcases our gorgeous city elements. What I've realized over the years is that, while clients know we want a beautiful backdrop, it's not common knowledge that photographers also want shaaaaaaaaaaaade! Lots of it. Not only is it next to impossible to get a toddler to give you a geniune smile while squinting into the sun, but the colors and gorgeous depth of a photograph is so much more pronounced when taken in the shade.

As busy holiday season begins, I thought I'd share some of my favorite spots to shoot family photos in San Francisco. If you have others to add, please include them!

1) Presidio / Lover's Lane: This is an awesome location because it has beautiful greens/blues/browns...is fairly secluded and provides a dozen backdrops in a very confined location. Here are some examples of shots taken in the Presidio: Brooke Bryand Photography | San Francisco Family Photographer | Lover's Lane Presidio Photograph Brooke Bryand Photography | San Francisco Family Photographer | Lover's Lane Presidio Photograph

2) Crissy Field/Palace of Fine Arts: The plus side? Gorgeous golden colors all around the Palace of Fine Arts. The challenge? Weekend crowds!! Dozens...and dozens...and dozens...and dozens of wedding parties being photographed each and every weekend! But if you don't have to drive or can shoot early, it's worth all of it! 3) Ferry Building / Bow & Arrow {Embarcadero}: I love this combo because there are so many gorgeous colors in the Ferry Building, coupled by the beautiful Bow & Arrow structure with the Bay Bridge in the background. Caution: you'll want to shoot this early in the morning or late afternoon as there isn't much shade cover near the Bow & Arrow! 4) Land's End/Sutro Baths: Ahhhh...I love these locations. They are gorgeous, tons of shade, dozens of backdrops and iconic San Francisco...fantastic! 5) Baker Beach: This one gets its own because you can easily do an entire shoot just at Baker Beach. First, it's a bit of a hike to get down to the "end" of the beach where the rocks are (beware if you have toddlers/carrying kids!). Second, there are a dozen (or more) areas behind Baker Beach that are fabulous photo locations too...from awesome trees to winding paths, Baker Beach has a ton of fantastic photo opportunities. 6) DeYoung Museum/Botanical Garden: Similar to Baker Beach, I'd suggest either early morning or late afternoon for these locations. Shade is definitely available, but not as prominent as I'd like (if I could walk around with a giant sun shade, I would! Are you sensing a theme here?). Awesome leading lines, great colors and a huge variety of backdrops make this a great spot for photos. There are dozens...dozens of other locations that are great in San Francisco. We are so fortunate to live in a city that lends itself to us daily! Some more favorites include:

  • Alamo Square
  • Buena Vista Park
  • Dolores Park
  • Legion of Honor

I hope this was helpful to you! Most of all, Happy Shooting!!!

Paige is 1! {Ferry Building} San Francisco Family Photographer

Paige is darrrrrrrrrrrrrrling! She is so curious as to this new world around her that walking has brought her - it's incredible to watch! We met at the Ferry Building to explore the early morning activity - so much to see and do...it took her special dog, her lovey and lots of singing (by me - eek!) to keep Paige's attention, but she made it 100% worth it! Here are a few of my faves from the Ferry Building shoot:

Alison + Travis {Ferry Building, Embarcadero} San Francisco Maternity Photographer

How these two stumbled into my world is beyond me as I am reminded that I have the best clients on Earth! Ali + Travis are about to be parents. As in, 7 weeks to go and they are going to be forever known as "MomAndDad" in a run-on sentence. I am THRILLED that I get to capture the entire first year of their parenthood once Baby Abigail arrives. We did their first shoot at the Ferry Building, headed down to the Bow and Arrow, then back to the Ferry Building. I am SO excited to share these photos as they were model clients (not only because they are both easy-on-the-eyes, but they are just fabulous, fun people to hang out with!).

Travis, officially on record as the most awesome-male-client-of-all-time (note: typically, I find that my male clients show up begrudgingly and don't actually enjoy the experience until after the shoot and they realize it was fun and they love their photos!), came uber-prepared with a super-fun shot list of ideas that would help capture their maternity session in such a personal way. I was so touched at his thoughtfulness...not for my sake, but as such an adorable and supportive hubby!

Side note: Ali also writes an awesome blog called 7x7xMommy that is cute and fun - definitely check it out.

Here's to you, Ali + Travis...you are going to make incredible parents and I can't wait to meet Abigail in 2011!

Madeline at One Year {Bow and Arrow | Embarcadero} San Francisco Family Photographer

I have known Madeline for most of her life...granted, she is just one year old, but still - meeting her at four months old counts as knowing her for "most" of her life! She ias a happy, sweet, smiley little girl. Somehow, she and Henry apparently can tolerate my singing (I'm still questioning whether their little ears are fully developed) and she was a total trooper as we powered through the drizzling San Francisco rain to get the shots we wanted at the Bow and Arrow on the Embarcadero!
